Dragons confident of firing Cops to end recent slump

Ratchaburi Mitr Phol seek to keep alive their faltering Thai League 1 top four hopes when they take on bottom-half club Police Tero tomorrow. The match, which is the 20th for both teams in the 2020/21 campaign, will be played at the Mitr Phol Stadium at 7.30pm Malaysian time.

Ratchaburi, who secured a historic spot in this year’s Asian Champions League after being among the top four at the halfway mark of the current season, have dropped down to sixth position. They have suffered recent poor form, winning just once and losing the other four of their latest five matches.

The Dragons fell further behind in the top four race following their 1-2 loss to Bangkok United last Saturday. They badly need a win tomorrow to get back among the top four, albeit temporarily, as fourth placed Muangthong United, just two points ahead, will only be in action against Samut Prakan on Wednesday.

Despite their lowly 10th position, Police Tero are currently enjoying good momentum. The Cips ended their three-match losing streak by winning back-to-back games last week.

Prior to their latest two wins, Police Tero had the second worst scoring record in League 1, scoring just  15 goals in 17 matches. However, they have suddenly discovered their scoring touch, plundering seven goals in their last two games. The Cops need not worry about being sucked into the relegation battle if they can maintain their recent scoring form.

Injuries and suspensions

There are no injuries and suspensions for both teams.

Head-to-head record

The reverse fixture on September 19, 2020 ended in a 1-1 draw. Adisak Srikampang’s 78th minute goal seemed enough to seal victory for the Cops but Dominic Tan’s own goal in the last minute of added time helped Ratchaburi steal one point.

Ratchaburi are clearly the better side in recent meetings, winning five and drawing twice in their last seven encounters. The last time Police Tero beat the Dragons was in a league game on October 10, 2015.

Key players to watch:

Ratchaburi

Kampol Pathomakkakul (Thailand): The intention of signing the 28-year-old goalkeeper in January from Muangthong United was as replacement for the departing substitute goalkeeper Kittipong Phuthawchueak. However, Kampol has since replaced Ukrit Wongmeema as the first choice as the latter has been in poor form recently. The new keeper can sustain his spot if he can help the team keep a clean sheet, which they haven’t tasted for nearly four months.

Police Tero

Arthit Boodjinda (Thailand): The 26-year-old forward scored only four goals in 14 league appearances this season, but the Cops won all the three games when his name was on the scoresheet. Also, Arthit is in his best form right now, scoring three goals and providing one assist in the last two matches.

Prediction

Despite Ratchaburi’s poor run of form, the Dragons are confident ahead of this game due to their superior head-to-head record. Especially since the last time the Cops beat Ratchaburi at the Mitr Phol Stadium was way back in May 28, 2014.

Score prediction: Ratchaburi to win 2-1.
