Perak fans force change of ‘ugly’ bull design

Fan power is a powerful tool in football, as learnt by the management of Perak FC.

The Malaysian Super League club’s supporters had strongly opposed the team’s new logo unveiled by the team management recently.

Perak FC unveiled the image on their Instagram page with the tagline “a new chapter begins, but the history remains”.

Strong opposition to the “ugly” logo, which features a bull on a black background with yellow border, had initially failed to move the Perak team management to reconsider the logo. They had insisted that the logo had received the thumbs up from the highest levels of the management and there was no reason not to retain it.

Fans had criticised the logo as being amateurish, and said it could have been created by anyone by downloading and pasting images available on the internet.

Continued backlash from the public caused the Perak state ruler Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, to intervene in the matter.

The Perak FC management relented, and have now left it to the supporters to submit their entries to the team’s logo-creating competition.

More than 1,500 logo entries have been received by Perak FC ahead of the closure of the competition today.

It is not the first incident of fans being unhappy with a team’s new logo in Malaysian football.

Last year, Kedah FC supporters had strongly opposed their new logo, which they claimed was too simple and could have been created by a schoolboy. The fans also won that time, with the unpopular logo subsequently changed to a new design.
